If you’re not familiar with SEO, it stands for ‘Search Engine Optimization’ and it is the process of having your website rank better in the search engines when users type in particular keywords that you hope to rank highly for…
For example, if you’re a newborn photographer in Cork, Ireland you might hope to be highly ranked when users type in “newborn photography in Cork Ireland”. So you site would show up in Google (or other search engines), and that user would hopefully click through to your site and be presented with your offer.
So how do you rank highly for these search terms?
SEO Tricks For Photography Businesses
Luckily it’s not too difficult to rank highly for most “local” based search terms…
A local based search simply means that the user types in the location. So instead of trying to rank highly for “newborn photography” which would be very hard, you instead just aim to rank for “Newborn Photogrpahy in Cork”, which is much easier, AND much more targeted. The reason it’s easier is because there will be far fewer sites competing to rank for this keyword, and those that do rank, probably don’t really know what they’re doing.
Here’s a few things you should do to ensure your site ranks highly:
- Include your keyword in the title of your page. This is the part in the very top of your browser window.
- Include your keyword in your ‘meta keywords’ and ‘meta description’ tags. This is a part of your site that helps tell the search engines what that page is about.
- Include your keyword in the text of your page a few times. Write it casually in the text so that it doesn’t stand out. Don’t use it too often because Google might see it as spamming.
- Get a few other sites to link to you using your keyword as the ‘anchor text’. This means the the text the user clicks should be your keyword, such as “newborn photography in Cork”
These simple tips are usually enough to get you ranked quite highly if the competition is low. If competition is moderate to high, then you’d do everything the same, but you would need to have a lot more links pointing to your website… Google loves links because it helps show them that your site has good quality content that other users would like to read.
